An engagement is a promise to marry and that is why any of the fiancés can break off the engagement for a reason. As for the breaking off the engagement without a reason, it is not permissible from the legal point of view.
If one of the fiancés offers gifts to the other, what is the ruling on those gifts if the engagement is broken?
